A week ago, a male Mediterranean monk seal named Kostis, who has become everyone’s favorite for about 8 years, and weighs 180 kilograms, was killed by harpoon in the world-famous holiday resort in the middle of the Aegean.
Dozens of non-governmental organizations, especially the MOM Mediterranean Monk Seal Research Group, launched a campaign to find the person who killed Kostis. Police, military and coast guard teams on the island launched a large-scale investigation.
TWO PRIVATE COMPANIES PUT 5,000 EURO AWARDS
The TOC and Attikes Ekdosis companies, which operate in the tourism business in the Thessaly Region, where the Swallow Island is located, announced in a statement to the Greek media that they will give a monetary reward of 5 thousand Euros to those who know, find or report who killed the Mediterranean monk seal with a spear.
It was stated that the Swallow Island (Alonissos) is one of the shelter and mating islands of the Mediterranean monk seals and is within the borders of the North Sporades National Marine Park.
