On the one hand, China continues to intensify its efforts on environmental protection. Announcing ambitious targets on the environment, the Chinese government has finally announced that they have determined that the part of the country to be kept under ecological protection will constitute at least 25 percent of the total surface area.
Cui Shuhong, an official from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said that the areas designated as protected areas include certain functional areas, sensitive and ecologically fragile areas, as well as areas important for biodiversity.
Chinese government officials are known to have issued a series of regulations in 2017 that include an “ecological red line” strategy and impose strict and coercive protection in certain areas.
According to Cui, the determination of the said regions has been completed. Cui underlined that they are strategically determined to create an ecological civilization as a country.
At the end of 2019, China had 11,800 natural protected areas of various types, accounting for 18 percent of its total area.
This result shows that the target of protecting only 17 percent of the land area at that time was exceeded.
