CIMC Raffles to Construct Dual Fuel Car Carriers for Wallenius

Chinese shipbuilder CIMC Raffles has received an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for up to six low emission LNGpowered car carriers for Wallenius Lines.

Construction will take place at CIMC Raffles’ Longkou shipyard in Yantai, China. The dual fuel rollon/rolloff vessels, developed by Knud E. Hansen, will be 200meterslong and 37meterswide with 6,500 CEU capacity. Each will be equipped with one Type C LNG tank for gaspowered operation.

The initial contract covers the first two vessels plus two options for two additional vessels each, bringing the total to six. All six are planned to be registered in Sweden.

“Today is a big day for Wallenius as we confirmed our Next Generation Low Emission Car Carriers,” said Kleberg Jonas, Chairman and CEO of Soya Group, the Swedishbased parent group of Wallenius Lines. “Wallenius is always committed to work with a premium and longterm partner, and we believe CIMC Raffles is our optimal selection. For now, we are also continuously working to develop innovative ship design concept and logistic solutions together with our partners to lead industry and maintain our strong market position.”

“Global emission cut and low carbon trend are the new requirement of the clean energy industry,” added Wang Jianzhong, CEO and President of CIMC Raffles. “We see that Wallenius is pretty forwardlooking by making good use of LNG fuel at the right time with pioneering and innovative green shipping. The strategic vision and sense of social responsibility are admirable.”
