Authorities have resonded to a major emergency 7.7 nautical miles offshore from Kuala Baram, Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, after receiving emergency calls from a Sapura platform construction vessel reporting that platform support ship Dayang Topaz was capsizing in severe weather conditions.
125 crew members from the vessel abandoned ship and have been rescued. One crew member is reported dead and four others are missing.
Reports state that the vessel broke its anchor and slammed into the
BeramB platform which is operated by Petronas Carigali, the oil exploration unit of state oil firm Petronas.
First reports state that the Dayang Topaz, an AWB was being used to accomodate workers on the platform when hit by massive waves during typhoon like conditions.
Emergency agencies confirm that the Dayang Topaz has sunk.
Rescue operations are ongoing.
0300 UTC Oct 27 UPDATE: The ship dragged anchor in stormy weather and drifted onto oil platform. It is highly likely, that the ship is still afloat. All sources mention 62 crew remaining on board and 125 jumping the ship. One more thing – collision just doesn’t look all that disastrous, considering the type of the ship – offshore support ship, highly resilient and compartmented. Understood on one of videos work deck of DAYANG TOPAZ after collision. 4 missing crew found, rescued, they’re safe.
0430 UTC Oct 27: Offshore support ship DAYANG TOPAZ sank off Kuala Baram, Sarawak, Malaysia, northern Borneo, in the early hours of Oct 27, reportedly after collision with oil platform. Understood there were 125 people on board, crew and offshore personnel. 121 people were rescued, 1 died, 4 remain missing, search is ongoing. From the looks of the ship, she was offshore support ship and probably, flotel or personnel transfer ship, that’s why there were so many people on board.
Preliminary investigation found that the incident occurred due to one of the anchor cables being severed due to bad weather in Miri waters.
Two died, one was injured and 184 others were rescued after their ship and an oil platform were damaged in the 6.45am incident at a Petronas oil rig located 7.7 nautical miles off Kuala Baram near Miri city. .
