Successful results are obtained in the fight against mucilage (sea saliva) covering the Sea of Marmara. However, new steps are being taken. Accordingly, mussels that eat organic wastes in the water will be grown in Yalova in the fight against mucilage. For this, 7 facilities will be established.
The process of establishing mussel farms in Çınarcık and Armutlu continues. It is planned to establish 7 facilities in the region where Mediterranean mussels, which are fed with organic waste and plankton in the water, will be grown by filtering the water in the seas.
The installation of 4 farms, whose projects have been approved, has been brought to the completion stage, while the others are expected to be operational by the end of the year. It is expected that 7 farms, whose cost is approximately 54 million TL, will start production after 3 years, and an annual turnover of approximately 126 million TL will be achieved.
In addition, it is aimed that 1000 people will earn money from this work with indirect employment, including 100 people to be assigned at the facilities. When the 7 farm projects come to life, 8 thousand 900 tons of mussels will be produced annually.
A natural reef will also be formed on an area of approximately 600 decares, thus providing suitable environments for the reproduction of living things. There is absolutely no external feeding in mussel farms.
It is fed by consuming organic wastes and small living things in the natural environment. Mussel farms will seriously act as a filter in the Sea of Marmara and take an active role in the fight against mucilage.
Considering the current market share, 7 mussel farms will contribute 100-150 million TL annually to the provincial economy. Mussels are used as an environment-repairing product, especially in the Baltic Sea.
It streamlines its environment, the ground, and besides, it becomes consumable. For Yalova, after 4-5 years, it will be able to use very different things in terms of mussels.
