The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the Pacific Ocean Fleet has started the largest exercise in the Pacific Ocean since the USSR era, with the participation of about 20 warships and submarines.
While the submarine forces of the US Pacific Ocean Fleet started the Agile Dagger 2021 Exercise in the Pacific Ocean last week, the Russian army is holding a comprehensive operational exercise in the same region.
Stating that the tactical ship group of the Pacific Ocean Fleet is deployed to the region where the exercise will be held, navigating approximately 4 thousand kilometers from the base points, the ministry said, “The flagship of the fleet, equipped with guided missiles, is the ‘Varyag’ missile cruiser and the large anti-submarine ship ‘Admiral Panteleyev’ and the ‘Marshal Shaposhnikov’ frigate. There are 20 warships, submarines and reinforcement ships, including the ‘Gromkiy’, ‘Sovershenny’ and ‘Geroy Rossiyskoy Federatsii Aldar Tsidenjapov’ corvettes.”
Noting that about 20 aircraft, including long-range anti-ship aircraft Tu-142M3, high-altitude fighters MiG-31BM, took part in the exercise, the ministry said, “As part of the exercise, during the protection and defense of naval (ocean) infrastructure facilities, in addition to duties related to the administration of different forces away from base points. In addition, tasks related to the organization of interaction between sea and air groups in the search and monitoring of submarine and ship groups of the so-called rival are carried out.
It was also noted that the exercise was carried out under the command of the Commander of the Pacific Ocean Fleet, Admiral Sergey Avakyanats.
