TCG Gediz frigate rescues 80 migrants off Tunisia


The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced that 80 asylum seekers were rescued from the wooden boat that drifted to the Tunisian coast.

According to the statement made on the Twitter account of the Ministry of National Defense, the TCG Gediz frigate, which was performing a reconnaissance and surveillance mission off the coast of Libya within the scope of the Turkish Naval Task Group, received the information that the boat was drifting towards the Tunisian coast.

An aerial search and scanning operation was started with the helicopter stationed on the frigate moving to the region. The boat with the refugees was detected in the Malta search and rescue area.

In coordination with the Maltese authorities, the refugees in the wooden boat were rescued by the Gediz staff.

The following statements were included in the statement made on the Twitter account of the Ministry of National Defense:

“As part of the Turkish Naval Task Group, our TCG GEDİZ Frigate, which is performing a reconnaissance and surveillance mission off the coast of Libya, moved to the region when it received information that a boat with 80 irregular migrants was drifting towards the Tunisian coast. The helicopter stationed at TCG GEDİZ immediately started search and scanning activities in the region and detected the migrant boat in the Malta search and rescue area. After the coordination with the Maltese authorities, the immigrants in the wooden boat were rescued by TCG GEDİZ.”
