Last month, the container ship X-Press Pearl, carrying chemicals off the coast of Sri Lanka, caught fire. After days of work, the fire was extinguished. The X-Press Pearl, now called the ‘Toxic Ship’, caused a major environmental disaster.
Last month, off the coast of Sri Lanka, the container ship X-Press Pearl caught fire, accompanied by thick smoke that could be seen from miles away. Finally, the fire was extinguished and the ship remained half-submerged on the shallow ocean bed.
Although the container ship was extinguished, the environmental disaster could not be avoided. Inside the ship, hazardous chemical wastes are still piled on top of each other. Some of these chemical wastes leaked into the sea.
Marine life is slowly being poisoned by these chemical wastes. Moreover, there are hundreds of tons of motor fuel sealed in the sunken part of the ship, which may leak into the sea.
In addition to environmental threats, it has brought devastating consequences for those whose livelihoods are fishing.
“We are small-time fishermen and we go to the sea every day. We can only gain something if we go to the sea, otherwise our whole family will starve,” a local fisherman told BBC News.
